Recently, I got a little bored with fashion. Say whaaaaaat?
As much as I love black and white and grey outfits (heck, I just bought two pairs of black shoes today after receiving one black pair three days ago...and a black skirt yesterday?), I feel like fashion bloggers/mags are being boring recently. I know that oversized coats are a thing, birks are a thing, monotones in winter are a thing (?!), airport fashion is a thing (like what? It's always skinny jeans, ankle chelseas, cozy knits, plus a designer bag), but being plain and boring and generic IS NOT A THING. Posting repetitive outfits is so not inspirational and I'm blaming fashion media for lack of outfit inspirations lately. It feels like as if the polar vortex (totes a thing...hell no) froze off everyone's creativity. And I think there are looks that you can call a "blogger look" because so many wear a similar look. If I were to be a legit fashion blogger, I would definitely seek out interesting pieces that are not overly popular, EVEN IF they're black and white pieces (examples see below)
And "it pieces". Like, those pieces are totally cool when one person or a couple are wearing it. But when EVERYONE has it, it's not interesting anymore. Like, the Balenciaga cutouts, or Isabel Marant western-ish studded sandals (forgot the exact name). They do look really great. But then, I think the logic behind it is: since a couple of bloggers really loved it, everyone thought they would be timeless pieces so everyone bought them. To me, there are notable pieces, like a Hermes Kelly, one that you recognize in an instant but then not everyone has it yet it remains timeless throughout the years; and then there are overly-hyped pieces. One day, you are gonna look at one of those hyped pieces and be like, back in the day when blah blah was a thing...and the certain blah blahs would be sitting in your closet begging for another day out and about.
Another thing is, since ALL fashion bloggers (pretty much, almost) are tall and skinny, it doesn't mean their clothes will look good on YOU, who are not tall and skinny. As far as I know, I will not rock backless silky dresses like Margaret would, because they're meant for her frame. I will not rock suit pants like Camille would because I'm short and chubs. I will not rock boyfriend jeans because I'm short and I can't wear heels on a daily bases to look taller in order to wear those things. Giant coats don't work for me either because there's no place to put it when I get to school everyday.
In the end, it's cold and miserable out, so wear something that pops to make your day (and everyone else's) day better.

NYFW is just around the corner + I haven't done a legit fashion post since like..May?
I get a ton of new editorial/campaign photos from various fashion websites everyday and I usually check out most of them whenever I have time. But it is hard to come across one that I really really like. Most of them are either badly photographed, or generically styled, or just way too photoshopped for anyone to enjoy the actual fashion. Here is one of them that literally hit me like, "holy shizzle this is fantastic!" Elle France did what everyone else has been doing - Summer-Fall transition pieces. But this is no ordinary Summer-Fall transition piece. It is totally wearable, replicable, and most importantly, cool.
One must recognize the pattern-play trend that's ever so popular in the fashion world. If you ever go through Tommy Ton's street-style captures, especially during major fashion shows, you'll notice that there is a huge amount of intense coloring and pattern layering. Like this:
Layering of different patterns, colors, and materials is fun. And I totally love that. BUT, it becomes unrealistic when most of what we, the rest of the humans, get are boring, unoriginal, and un-chic patterns in most department stores, we should consider a tone-down version of pattern-play. And the styling in the photograph below is totally doable with the right accessories.
What Elle France exhibited does embody, at times, this doable and tone-down quality. Patterns in the photographs are simple and workable. And I'm digging the shit out of them. Yet, they keep some other high-fashion traits - eg that structured jacket. Tell me the last time you found a properly voluminous jacket at Macy's...
I am also a huge fan of boyish looks...and flats.....and argyle socks. The left is the definition of coolness - puffy hair, raised collars, and cuffed+pleated pants. Ultimately, the girl next door goes tomboy. While this is a darn-good example of easy style, the right seemingly gives more inspirations. What if I pull my socks over my skinny pants? What if my shoes don't "go" with the rest of the outfit? What if I add a little androgynous feel to it through a peplum top? All the possibilities. It's never about the entirety of your outfit. The key lies with the elements that stand out.
There's another trend that most people would not accept - wearing sneakers with formal clothing. The Man Repeller certainly went with it though. (Because she's not "most people", certainly..) It takes some courage to do it, to be honest. And I have yet to try it, with my grey+pink ones. I think I am at the phase of wearing Chuck Taylors with dresses/skirts. And that's the best I could do for now. Maybe my sneakers just lack that extra oomph...
Attention: head-gears are in town. It doesn't matter if its a turban (above), a fashion hat, or just a Nike cap, having accessories on your head = cool. I am not particularly a headwear kind of person, simply because it makes me look like a bobblehead. To everyone else who can make it work - DO IT! It really makes your look look polished (hehe). But keep in mind, wear what is least expected. For examples see below.
Beside all the things I pointed out, there are just so much more I like about this editorial. It is not necessarily the best editorial ever, but it is COOL, and it features the expected and the unexpected from a major fashion magazine. There are so many instances that make you realize all the recyclable items in your closet that can fire up your outfit into greatness, and that you don't have to be super rich to show your personality in your outfits. It all lies in how you want to make it work, how you can be the unexpected.

You can tell I'm trying really hard to keep posting. But I do really really really want to share one of my favorite fashion bloggers of all time (& there aren't that many!), Leandra Medine, and her absolutely brilliant Man-Repelling techniques in dressing. She has created tons of amazing and unique outfits and many fun tutorials on layering (have I mentioned that before?). So, here are some of my favorite looks of her in 2012 (with the shiny-pants one from Dec. 2011 because I just couldn't resist!).
She also invented the concept of "Arm Party" where you wear tons of accessories on your arms. Here are some demos.
She designs the Mr Dannijo line for Dannijo, the jewelry designer. There were also a pair of flamingo flats she designed! (Can't remember where but you'll see it on her site.) One of my favorite things is her gigantic super amazing shoe collection which I absolutely envy. & Most importantly, check out her blog by clicking the link on the side bar of my blog!

So I was going through The Sartorialist's archive so I can help contribute a few ideas by sending in my own "photo combinations" to him for The Sartorialist II book. So here are the two that I came up with:
The Sartorialist is the best!!! It's a fashion must-read and I'm contemplating on getting the first book. It's definitely my favorite street fashion source and I hope y'all like it too. Lots of originality there. :)
Also, Haley Reinhart followed me on Twitter yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited I'm already telling the world about this. AHHHH!!!!! Imagine the day when I meet Lady Gaga. ;)
